 Lawyers Associated Worldwide ("LAW"), a leadinginternational network of law firms, held its 20th Annual General Meeting ("AGM") in Singapore October 21-24, 2009. The meeting was hosted by the member firm of De Souza Lim & Goh LLP. The Knox Firm is one of 108 member firms in over 150 jurisdictions. Dave Mosier attended the AGM as the Knox Firm Delegate. Singapore offers a unique blend of history, culture, commerce and dynamism. The Chinese, British, Indonesian, Korean and Malaysian cultures have blended in Singapore to create a commercial hub. Trade is a cornerstone of this culture and through the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC"), Singapore is emerging as a favored commercial arbitration forum.
This year's AGM featured the presentation of the LAW Strategic Plan for the next five years. The plan was developed by the LAW Executive Committee in conjunction with Alan Hodgart from H4 Partners in London. Mr. Hodgart presented the Plan to the Delegates. The goal of the Strategic Plan is to achieve consistency in service standards from one jurisdiction to the next and to have the LAW name and brand associated with this consistency among the member firms.
As the 5-year plan unfolds, LAW will continue to expand its membership to provide member representation in all major commercial and financial centers and to provide core practice area representation in each business center in which LAW has a presence. The core areas are already provided by the Knox Firm and include: corporate (including M&A); banking (commercial loan) and finance; tax; real estate; commercial litigation; labor; and intellectual property. The Strategic Plan represents an important aspect of LAW's future, building on what is already a successful 20 year history, and now focusing on the rapidly developing trends in the global legal market.
Other matters on the AGM agenda included:
- The rollout of the newly refreshed LAW website, which is sure to elevate LAW's image as well as providing better functionality for both members and visitors;
- Consideration of a Young Associate Professional Program, to encourage younger attorneys to become more active and share their separate contact/referral sources; and communication patterns (e.g. Twitter);
- A presentation regarding arbitration at the SIAC by Ms. Rachel Foxton Head of Business Development at the SIAC; and
- A panel presentation that included Dave Mosier on the topic of Best Practices in Law Firm Management and Trends in Marketing.
